★ポップ・シンガーとして大衆的な人気を得ていた1950年代以降とはひと味もふた味も違って、カクテル・スウィング〜ジャイヴ・ミュージックを軽妙に歌って奏でるキング・コール。とにかく粋！　ピアノ・プレイに関しては、アール・ハインズのスタイルを踏襲しながらも、ストライド奏法から開放されたモダンな一面にも大いに注目したいところです。
★様々な編成のセッションが含まれていますが、根幹を成すのはやはりキング・コール・トリオ。オスカー・ムーア(g)＆ウェズリー・プリンス(b) との初代トリオを完全網羅しています。ピアノ・トリオと言えば、バド・パウエルの登場以降、ピアニストが圧倒的な主役となる[ ピアノ/ ベース/ ドラム] を指すのが一般的ですが、当時のキング・コールはドラムの代わりにギターが入った[ ピアノ/ ギター/ ベース] を採用。この編成は3 者が対等に近い立場でアンサンブルやインタープレイをスリリングに繰り広げるという魅力があり、アート・テイタムやオスカー・ピーターソンらに受け継がれることになります。
